As a follow-on to this.. I don't know how many versions have been made for FS but the only one I've ever found worthy as a 'keeper' has been the old WoP model. It's probably about time something newer arrived.. hoping that it's for BOTH sims ;-)

Tony, that picture is of an early Liberator II. It is evident by the longer nose of the D model but lacking any dorsal turret and having the original open tail turret emplacement.

Ol' 927 is a sister ship to these being one of the Liberator I B-24A/LB-30A aircraft (which was actually the second batch acquired as the 6 YB-24A/LB-30B's were delivered first). We discussed putting it in either a Coastal Command scheme or one similar to the photo you posted, but in the end it was decided to do a scheme that is more representative of how the airplane would have looked had it gone to the USAAF as a B-24A instead of being converted into a LB-30A.

I would like to see a version of the transport model.

Tony, that was the paint I was going to attempt myself. Unfortunately I had major issues with the model so it didn't seem worth the effort, but its nice to see how it might have turned out.

Yes, the Alphasim one Tony. The nose on their B-24D model is between 2 and 3 foot too short, and closer to the real life A model than the extended nose of the D. Its a shame because the repaint potential for the D is huge. Ah well, maybe I'll cut my repaint teeth on Aerosoft's forthcoming Catalina. ;-)

Paul, having seen the original pictures of AM927 (Ol' 927) and her sisters as they were delivered, the nose is much closer to that of a D-model than you think. It may be off, but not enough to be anywhere close to the "stub nose" that the original Liberator I/LB-30A/B-24A aircraft had.

It's hard to see the difference now since none of these aircraft survive (the only one is AM927 and she has a D-model nose at present), but in a few years after the B-29 is flying again, we're going to do a major down-time on her and put her bomb bays back in, shorten the nose, and re-install the dorsal gun ring (have to move the control cables to do it) so you will see what one would have looked like when that is complete. It's really a huge difference (on the order of 6 feet) though.

Chris, lets me rephrase that: its more reminiscent of an A model than a D. No doubt Dan will be rolling his eyes at seeing me bring this up once again, but the B-24 was an aircraft that I'd looked forward to immensely, and was aghast that despite the errors being pointed out prior to release, its was sold as seen.

I have an abiding interest in the type, having lived in 2nd Air Division territory, and passing the crumbling runways at Shipdam, Tibbenham, Hethel and North Pickenham on Sunday bike rides as a boy. I know the type, and while it isn't exactly an A, Chris, it most certainly is not a D.

The comparison below illustrates the discrepancy in the length and shape of the nose, using the length of the cockpit side window as a common datum.

The model doesn't look too bad until you compare it to the real deal :o As is always the case.. models are only as good as the line drawings they're made from
