I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I thought it was so the C1K chaps could practice recieving, as the larger aircraft could carry enough fuel for the C1K chaps to practice proding and still have enough left for the smaller aircraft to have a go.

So why are they frequently seen in pairs?
So hopefully that, the batteries hold out in at least one of the Delco Carousel INS Units....

Nice shots all :tab:
shame we don't have 2 VC-10's fly over Kent or one for that matter :-( Would like to see them at Manston again.
Yeah why do they fly them in pairs do they do that with the Tristars?

Happy New Year James
One of the guys has already mentioned why the '10s' do it if you scroll back a few posts ;-) All the RAF 10's have a permanently fitted receiving probe.. not all the RAF Tristars do. The max fuel that can be carried by a VC10(K3) is around 73tonnes and a K4 (no internal tanks) is 68tonnes (C1K a little more at 69.

. Plonk this against a Tristar which with internal tanks fitted can carry 139.7tonnes.. you'll see that the necessity for a Tristar to receive fuel is a lot less than a VC10 ;-)
