The only thing I can think is that within the effect its self, the position where the particles start from may be different, thus meaning the 'y' compontent may need to be moved so that the smoke looks thike its origination from the engine

Well this is how I did it:-
DC8
[SMOKESYSTEM]
Smoke.0=2.50, -57.70, 46.00, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.1=2.50, -57.70, 26.00, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.2=2.50, -57.70, -26.00, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
Smoke.3=2.50, -57.70, -46.00, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
//smoke.4=0,-36,-73, fx_contrail_320
//smoke.5=0,-36, 73, fx_contrail_320
VC10
[SMOKESYSTEM]
Smoke.0=2.50, -57.70, -9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.1=2.50, -57.70, -15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.2=2.50, -57.70, 9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
Smoke.3=2.50, -57.70, 15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
//smoke.4=0,-36,-73, fx_contrail_320
//smoke.5=0,-36, 73, fx_contrail_320

Here is the original DC8 smoke system.
[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=-5.00, -15.00, 46.00, fx_hjg_dc-8
smoke.1=-5.00, -15.00, 26.00, fx_hjg_dc-8
smoke.2=-5.00, -15.00, -26.00, fx_hjg_dc-8
smoke.3=-5.00, -15.00, -46.00, fx_hjg_dc-8

Will this work for DM's VC10 in FSX...? The smoke is vertical instead of horizontal giving the impression that the smoke comes out of the rudder...
Anyone fixed this yet...?

Where have you been hiding for the last 2 years mate

The difference between the smoke in FSX and FS9 is the the order of the coordinates is different, so all you have to do is change... x,y,z (FS9 style) to y,z,x (FSX Style)
Now that said, FS9 smoke effects look like pants in FSX as the smoke generator in X is much more advanced. DM has redone the smoke in his new frident, so if it where me, I'd change the coordinates as per, and also change the effect to the one in his latest Trident update IF your using FSX ;-)
