Indeed Pete

The Tay One-Eleven was a very sound project

The rug was pulled out of it to protect the 146 which they they failed to support properly in the next generation.

I'ts hard to work out just what drives them sometimes. :dunno:

With the One-Eleven you would have had a converted aeroplane zero houred with new systems and engines....a modern aircraft at a good price, something that alarmed BAe.

I don't know why as the two are different with the 146 being a highly specialised inter city jet.

It might have done them well to have got involved and kept fingers in two pies.

Sometimes it's worth supporting anything in any industry just to keep that industry going even if it does mean a few zeros missing on the end of the balance sheet.

Well, I might be wrong after having read Pete's interesting explanations. But I always thought that it was RR who wanted to prevent a homegrown rival for their Fokker 100 Tay-deal. And in my eyes this looks like the only reason that makes (a little) sense on that story. Because originally the 146 was designed as an short haul alternative, specialised on city airports and mountaineous regions where 4 engines are needed - so I can't see too much rivalry to a possible 1-11 MkII

Intersting topic to think about though!

Best wishes,

Nick

My understanding too from anything I have read on the matter was that it was BAe who pulled the plug. Alot was down to internal rivalry between the various BAe divisions, where the old DH business held much more sway than the ex Vickers areas. Also the prospect of closing the old Vickers facilities was seen as more palletable than closing Hatfield at the time, as BAe would have to close somewhere due to a major cost cutting execise that was happening in the late 70's
