Classic British Flight Sim

Reading through the daily posts as I do, it's obvious that many of you will grab any update as soon as it's released and throw it onto your pc's. I'm very much from the school of 'if it aint broke.. don't fix it' so am rather more reluctant to tamper with a fully functional, stable system. For sure, I could probably get the odd fps increase by downloading and installing the latest graphics drivers, sound drivers e t c but I choose not to as experience has taught me that newer is not always better

I have 4 pc's in my toyroom, one in the office and a further one that my daughter has exclusive use of which I leave to it's own devices. Of the 4 in the toyroom.. the 4th is the newest.. a recent new build using WinXPSP2. As soon as the OS, drivers and AV were installed, I thought it prudent to put SP3 on then install all the other progs I wanted (eg FS9 and FSX.. that's all it has and that's all the PC is used for). FS9 has been unreliable from the word go as have progs associated with it (FSNav for 1) but FSX seems fine.. not the way I'd like it to be! :roll: It's possible that SP3 isn't the cause of the instability of FS9 but it's certainly the easiest to blame. Had I installed SP3 after loading the sims, I'd have taken it off already but as they were loaded on top of SP3, I'm loathe to remove it for obvious reasons.

Anyway.. that's diluted alan's original post too much. It's obvious that he's not one of the 'download the instant it's released' brigade either though for the sake of his sanity, I think he'll have to go with SP2 and I can't see him having a problem with that. If all he uses the pc for is flightsim, why install SP3 until it's necessary?? There's no good reason why he shouldn't.. just the fact that the pc he's talking about is purely used for flightsim and SP3 will do nothing to enhance it ;-)

That's why MS release Service Packs, it's because they've found something that's broke, ditto the monthly patches that frequently fix security holes etc.

Yes.. I know skip but thanks for pointing it out :roll: Security patches and critical updates.. I take as a matter of course and am happy to do so.. even though I have no idea what the hell most if not all of em are for

Maybe the install of FS9 on my new pc is duff. Maybe the progs that run with it are duff. Maybe the PC itself is duff. Maybe the reason FSX runs well is purely a ploy by M$ to rub my nose in it. I really don't know and don't have the inclination at this moment in time to find out ;-)

I am a big fan of waiting to install service packs until they have been "out there" for a time. Let others finish the beta testing. That said, I installed WinX SP3 about six weeks after release and have had absolutly no problems with it. It has decreased boot times but not dramtically. I have FS9 and FSNAV and there have been no problems with those and SP3.

I would advise going for SP3 at this point bcause it does fix some security holes.

Alan,

NTL (Virgin) only use the MAC address of the network device which is connected to the modem or set top box. The operating system has no relevance to the NTL registration site whatsoever. You shouldn't need to re-register unless you change a network card or router/access point.

Hi All.
Well its been a slog,but a couple of days ago,my computer shut down completely,so i tried re-registering,and my computer started up once more,but at first i could not get on the net.
But i have now got that working,some things are not as they where,but most seem to be ok.
Once i have checked out my system fully,i will make a backup,and then install sp2,thanks for your help guys.
