Thanks for posting those Tom, seems only yesterday you appeared here to ask some questions about joining up! :o
Nice to see the dear old GPMG still doing sterling service, it also looks like they issue loadies with side arms now, once apon a time we had SMG's! Bloody useless things that
always got in the way

Your body armour seems better too, but I guess the locals there are a little more trigger happy than those of
'gentler times'.

Been in 4 years and a week now. Seen it all

The GPMG is still going strong, still as accurate as before but blimey it makes a great noise! The body armour has just been upgraded again into a desert coloured one and seems a little lighter. The sidearms are great to have. I can't imagine I would be able to grab my SA-80 quick enough if the worst happened. But at least I could use my sidearm for a VERY short period before I attempt to get the SA-80 out!

Hell, the GPMG is so good, us Yanks bought a bunch as the M240 to replace the M60 on vehicles and some squad uses and it's little brother the MINIMI as the M249 to replace the M60 in primary squad use.
See, sometimes we do smart things.

At least the M60 looked the part

I always feel sorry for the poor sod who gets lumbered with the section's GPMG... good to have in a fight but not when you have to lug the thing about on a 20k fast tab

The US only uses the M240 on vehicles and heavy support squads (i.e. the guys who always move in APCs or HMMVWs) so no one has to lug it around. That's one drawback is that it's heavier than the M60 by several kilos and the use of 7.62 means that it's the "odd man out" in the squad since all other weapons use 5.56, hence the reason to acquire the MINIMI, however the bad side is that while the M60 was actually pretty accurate, the MINIMI is nothing more than a "spray and pray" weapon. It's one thing that many on this side at least don't like as they were used to the M60 and being able to be at least semi accurate with it.

Thanks for the pics.
It does indeed get bloody hot over there. Thank god the humidity isn't too bad.

Brilliant! I did have a good laugh at that
For several months I lived in a wooden box in Baghdad, sadly no gimpy (just a Beretta & a 'locally acquired' AK) but I reckon my seat was better;
Well, it was thirsty work! :drinkers:
Cheers

We did a dual (both doors) firing run (blanks ;-) )at a Tiger meet once, from inside it sounded brilliant, when we asked those on the ground what they thought, most had not even noticed!! Still, it gave the operator some sense of authority, only ever fitted them once in a blue moon though, bit like the winch

.

Heh, I wonder what it sounds like inside an AC-130 when it's giving somebody the good news with all 3 weapon systems

It refers to their uniform pattern James. ACUPAT means Army Combat Uniform Pattern.
