"The Penetrators" was quite clearly staed to be a work of "fiction" but it was written by someone very familiar with the aircraft, defence systems and international politics of the time. I wonder where my copy is now?

i recall a tale of the vulcan flying on an excercise in the us, the americans cousins thinking..."easy prey"

then a fast jet...harrier i think popped out from below, and spooking the living poop out of the septics, and the vulcan making it to its target,

the story goes that a fast jet hid below the vulcans shape.......

would be cool if it was true, and i seem to remember it coming from an excercise in goose bay!!!!!!!

From what John Shippey said It was NOT fiction - SAC caught hell for it - and as I said supposedly a Vulcan passed between Washington National Airport and the White House and to make things worse exited at low level OVER the Naval Academy at
Anapolis - Joh wasnt sure of the exact date but as it was sometime between 63 and 67. He also said that the B36 shook F84s
and F86s by making fairly steep turns at very high altitude causing the T Jet and the Sabre stall (at that altitude they were
already in "Coffin Corner" ) Yet a little wooden Jet built by Dehavilland could stay with them at hi altitude -- Peter is this
true??

Yeah, the B-36 crews loved to scare the living daylights out of their escorts by slowly easing back on the throttle until they stalled the other aircraft. The escorts were so focused on flying formation and the B-36 pitch changed so little while slowing down, the pilots would be coming off the power to stay with the plane and not realize it until the plane snapped and they found themselves looking at the ground. Never got anyone hurt (plenty of time to recover) and I'm not even sure that anyone ever formally complained because of the embarrassment it'd cause the pilots of the escort aircraft for having allowed themselves to be put in that situation anyway.

Some pilots who were good did it with the B-52 as well. They'd pull 1 engine on each pod back to idle so it'd still look like they were producing power (no real major change in the contrails or smoke when you only back off one engine from the formation positions) and slow down until the escorts had to either break off or stalled. I know of one B-52 pilot who did it to a Chinese escort.

I've heard a similar story many times from many different sources regarding similar events at a Red Flag but it was always a gaggle of Buccaneers that were hiding underneath the Vulcan. Obviously it was very much bad cricket as there is no way you'd get away with it in wartime but a great giggle nonetheless. It goes something along the lines of a cocky F-15 pilot rolls out of the sun and calls fox 2 on the Vulcan, which concedes defeat and rolls away to reveal the Buccaneers, who do what Banana Jets do best and scatter to the four winds.
