If your getting it for free (i.e. bundeled with the PC) I'd go for Vista. I have found it more stable than XP (Been running it at work and home for the last 15 months). It is different though. Vista will not be replaced for another 3 years, so I'd get it and get used to it now.

I don't deny that "Windows 7" (Vienna, formerly Blackcomb) has been mentioned as having a development life of three years, however it has already been in development for quite some time and a lot of the evidence points towards a 2009 release.
