I have a 23" widescreen
love it
wouldn't go back to my 19"crt I still have , and use it for another pc ( I built it in 2002 and is still kickin)
yes my panel in FS is a bit out of sorts but Big deal
at my age my eye balls aren't either.
it's like the camera issue
study hard and hopefully you'll find a good deal that will cover any
if'y things you don't like about it
like my 23" was on sale for 229.00 dollars Brand new in the box

the bad? ...................... I'll get back to ya on that....

Martin,
I'll take a few pics of FS 'on the screen' rather than the usual screenshots so you can see what it looks like. I'll try and post them tomorrow. Trying to find a native res same as your 19" CRT which is 4:3 'ish is no good. Not sure how things work between G/cards and display adaptors but before i got my 22" WS I wasn't getting resolution options as high as I'm offered now - must be magic.

Here are some figures to give you an idea:
17" 4:3 1280x1024
17" WS 1440x900
19" 4:3 1280x1024
19" WS 1440x900
20" 4:3 1600x1200
20" WS 1680x1050
22" WS 1680x1050
24" WS 1920x1200
Your graphics card will work with a 22" widescreen but it may struggle with the resolution. These are some figures from an X800GTO review I've just read:
Battlefield 2
1024x768 78fps
1280x1024 66fps
1600x1200 47fps
Doom3
1024x768 63fps
1280x1024 44fps
1600x1200 31fps
Far Cry
1024x768 90fps
1280x1024 84fps
1600x1200 67fps
FEAR
1024x768 44fps
1280x1024 30fps
1600x1200 20fps
Quake 4
1024x768 103fps
1280x1024 70fps
1600x1200 56fps
So you see how increasing the resolution puts more strain on the card. All of the above figures were are with no FSAA or anything else applied so whilst you'll end up with a nice big picture and more desk space, FS will be slower than before.
With regards to upgrading from an XP2800 to an XP3200, I wouldn't bother as you'll be throwing money at old technology.

See this was something that I didnt think about, or to be more truthful understood. I thought it would just widen the screen and as my neighbour says be 'tickety boo' (some kind of Plymouth speak I think). But after reading all of your suggestions, I somehow think I should perhaps keep the money and put it towards the all important upgrade. The weather isnt that wonderful at the beginning of the year either, so instead of flying could save the money likewise. At the moment I am quite content with my sim set up (get an average of 40fps) and was just being a little selfish in thinking that I could run it a little bit better with a widescreen monitor. Wrong!! - the native resolution matter never entered my head at all.
The only way of doing is would be to get a 19" TFT which runs at 1280x1024 (going for about £130 at Play.com) but then I'm not really gaining anything cept a clearer display, am I?
I cant thank you all enough, cause if I hadnt listened to your views and suggestions, I would have wasted my money.
Best wishes to all,
Martin

Hi Martin... to give you an idea, its a bit like when widescreen tele's first came out. The picture was recorded in 4/3 format and the TV sets stretched it to fit the new wider screen making people look extra wide!

However.... If you were watching a widescreen DVD, the picture was much better as they had been recorded in widescreen.
Basicly same goes for FS. Albeit not as pronounced.
RE the resolution issue, my 192 flat panel has a native res of 1280 x 1024 and if I run FS at this res on my machine framrates are ok..... (Fullscreen)
If I switch to 1024 x 768 frame rates are much better, but the image is a little "smudged"
If I run 1024 x 748 in windowed mode I get great frame rates and NO smudging and I can see the rest of my desktop.

I use a Samsung 713BM which is 1280x1024 native.
My framrerates double if I run FS9 in 1152x864 - and I can not tell any major difference on screen.
