Oddly enough, on my first ever day as a PC owner, the first time it was used I saw an icon of a PC being unpacked.
I thought that might be a good palce to start looking! 2 minutes later it asked me if I really wanted to format C drive and I could not get away from this question. Rather than just turn off the PC, I reluctantly said yes.........................no PC any more
So been there, done it and got the T shirt.
As far as FSX goes, are these registry cleaning programmes freeware and if so can I have a reccomendation please. I am in no hurry as I only use FSX as a tool for some beta testing...never for pleasure

This might be a good place to start Trev, Computer Active. Here's the link to free downloads for registry cleaners. Some are freeware and others limited demos, but what the heck, you may only need to use it once!! Or maybe some-one can point you in the right direction.

Good luck

my suggestion about trial versions of programs is to Not use them.
I have had a few that cause more harm than good
stick with the freware programs that get a lot of hits on google or other search engines and that have good reviews by the users
also be careful of the Free Download language
I have noticed these scumbags that list their programs as freeware
but are not...... they are just Free to download ( these hard up types that list their software as free
are most suspect for trogans and spyware)
you know this creative use of language is getting out of hand
I've seen it more and more lately.

Thanks Nigel,
It seems there are two options (without spending money), the trial version of Registry Mechanic or a freeware programme that does a similar job.
So, I manually delete both the main FSX folder and the one in Application Data (with the .cfg) and then run this registry cleaner....correct?
Willw doing a 'make a restore point' first still work, or does the registry work at a lower level?
I just don't want to muck up anything else important that I cannot restore, if this FSX thing goes wrong.

Hi Trev
the system restore does reset the registry
However it will also delete downloaded files or saved files
like exe. and dlls that are monitered by system restore
But you can keep that from happening by moving them to you My doucuments Folder
in fact if you want to make sure something isn't changed by sysytem restore
move it to the "my doucuments folder"
That is what I understand ........ but then again we're dealing with MS and
I don;t trust everyt ing they say.
tis why I didn't buy FSX and probably will not
............................Comon FS11

After much deliberating, I took the plunge, (after backing up on 'flyaway HD') and deleted FSX manually. I bought registry mechanic and ran it. It found 3,000 :o minor errors and fixed them.
However, I still cannot load FSX (the installer cannot verify the patch, or some thing along those lines); either the disc is now faulty or MS have planted the security code somewhere else and it will not load as it is still confused. Good job I am not an FSX fan!
