Its known as Display of Registration Mark Exemption, I can't remember what the rules are exactly, but I think the type must be out of production and (if its a military serial) must not be current with that airforce. :dunno:

Its somewhere in here... http://www.opsi.gov.uk/SI/si2000/uksi_20001562_en.pdf

As long as the airframe is wearing a colour scheme that was actually worn by that very type, then the civilian registration doesn't have to be carried on the fuselage or under the wings. Regulations became a little lacking in the early 1990s with the sudden influx of Yak-52s into the UK and now more stringent measures have been taken. Same goes for countries that refuse permission - the registration has to be worn - i.e. Gary Numan's Harvard Mk.IIB when it was in Japanese colours.

As someone that has researched and supervised the repainting of a number of Harvards into authentic colour schemes, every few years I have to revalidate the colours for their owners.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that if it wasn't carrying the civil registration it should have an easily readable alternative, or words to that effect. Obviously with the Harvard that's not really a problem, similarly the airworthy Vixen. Not sure about what the markings are like on XH558, but it's not as if you could mistake it for another one someone had got airborne!
