If the CAA open up to the posibility of a Jag, the doors are open to lots of types, but I think they are going to use 558 as a bit of a test case, if all looks well there may be more options. Because multi jets are classed as complex, they have been a bugger (in terms of expense) to get the CAA to PTF. However, obviously a Bucc / Jag / (dare I say) Lightning being multi engine is more likely to survive engine failure and arguably safer than hunters / gnats / JP's etc.

I guess time will tell.

I've not heard anything about that Jaguar recently; I do remember when it was being mentioned a lot on various forums but it seems to have gone quiet now. I suppose it depends on how difficult the Jaguar is to operate and maintain; from what I understand the official objection to allowing Frightnings to fly in the UK again is nothing to do with the fact that it has reheat or is a supersonic interceptor or any of the reasons you might expect but is something to do with the maintenance of the engines. I can't recall the exact facts but while it was sad to learn the reasons why Lightnings would never fly again over the UK it did provide a glimmer of hope that other fast jets might end up in civilian hands on the airshow circuit.

Of course I may just be talking a load of old cobblers (please correct me if I am) but that is certainly what I recall reading about the CAA and their rulings on complex ex military aircraft.

Saying that though Ben....they let the JP, gnats and Hunters fly at shows.....I forsee things will change for the better in the next couple of years....trust me...I work for the NHS

Aye Techy, we live in hope. There is an airworthy Bucc.... (Hawker aviation?) but I don't think its ever done the circuit. I'm pretty certain it was on a full COA too, rather than a PTF. Haven't heard anything in the last year though.

I think they were being held up with restoring the Bucc due to certain parts (related to the seats I think) being hard to get hold of.

I'm not sure we're likely to seem much other 'complex' ex-military stuff coming on the register soon. Although I believe someone registered a Tucano recently and if the Gnat is anything to go by the Hawk could become quite popular.

Seems to be the case that over-compexity is the issue. Now, I know virtually nothing about maintaining aircraft, but it is easy to grasp that maintaining any single engine jet (particularly a non afterburning one) must be a fair deal less complex (or at the very least costly) than a twin jet supersonic machine.

Just such a different level of design on the airframes as well. Perhaps if all goes swimmingly with 558, then things may change for the better.

What about running costs?

One of the guys from HHA dropped into the Key forums a couple of months ago to quash some of the rumours concerning the Bucc. He was saying that the lack of recent activity was due to the fact that income generating projects are taking priority over the Bucc. There do not appear to be any problems concerning the availability of parts. Seems fair enough.
