Not sure if this will be of any use to you with you old saitek but funnily enough I had the same problem with one of my saitek joysticks once. The way I solved it was that when I was loaded up in the sim and on the ground, i would twist it one way, lett it settle and then twist it the other way, a bit like "checking for free movement" I suppose.
This normally cured it, and I would have no more problems in that flight.
