The video was apparently took by the local band of spotters, many of them are also well equipped with radios and follow the pilots transmissions with the tower.... :roll:

Well the long and the tall of it, is (and I'm guessing here) that the pilot may have had an indication of that the right-hand gear wasn't locked or so... thus requesting an emergency landing...

This been captured by spotters is like holding up a big sign in front of housewives saying "SALE!"

The photographer mumbles something in the beginning of the video that even I can't hear, but when the aircraft hits the ground, they are shouting: "We are not seeing this, we are NOT seeing this"
which is obviously a lie...

after he looses his grip of the camera and get hold of it again, he talks though the cell-phone:

"We have a crash, bring it all out .." or something the like...apparently to fellow spotters...

The exact flow I haven't heard yet, but in the radio news-flash, they just said that Scandinavian is now checking all their Dash-8Q400's landing gears. (they've got 13 or so)

Of couse Scandinavian was at AAL immediatley to support and investigate the "episode" and Bombardier as well I quess, they have stated that it was to be considered as a one-off episode.

The most important thing though is that no-one got seriously hurt, and many of the hospitalized was able to leave the hospital be own mean allready the same evening.

Most gear unsafe indications are spurious so the crew, although prepared for it to fold, probably didn't actually think it would. So no need to kill the donkey as long as the PAX are moved out of the rows in proximity to the props. It might be difficult to tell on the video, but there seems to be no aileron deflection to port as it lands to keep the wing up - bourne out by how rapidly it falls over and departs on its ground loop.

To some extent, the "ground loop" may have also been intentional. While most would say staying on the runway is the best bet, remember that if the people have to exit quickly, concrete is a heckuva lot harder than dirt/grass/etc.

Also, the prop "exploding" is exactly what it's supposed to do. It's composite, so it's supposed to shatter like fiberglass (or fibreglass as you guys spell it... ) into small, relatively safe chunks that shed most of their velocity (and thus damage potential) in the act of breaking. Hopefully, if the shielding around the fuselage worked as it's supposed to, there was no risk of cabin penetration.

Exactly the same type of accident in Vilnius last night. Starboard gear collapsed and a divert to Vilnius was carried out instead of original destination as Vilnius is a bigger airport with better rescue facilities.

Again the starboard gear collapsed at touchdown. All pax and crew unharmed....

Apparently Bombardier has already 2 years ago send out a warning, but has obviously now recommended grounding of all aircraft with over 10.000 landings, and a special checkup of those.
