Vegas... anything in the event logs? Was this capture taken when the machine was running slowly?

Nothing untoward in the logs Ben. Then again I'm not sure what I'm looking for TBH. This capture was taken shortly after the 5 minute eternal boot up. Also another thing. Sound seems distorted. Kind of like its skipping beats as if the machine is struggling to run the music application. Just trying an on-line kaspersky scan as we chat.

It definately sounds like something is eating cpu cycles... or memory. If the RAM is full, the computer will page the memory to disk which is much slower.

If you could do a screen capture of the performance tab and the sorted cpu graph at the time your having the problem that might give us more to go on. In the system logs your looking for an error (red) or Warning (orange / yellow) at the time the machine is booting. These errors would likely be in the system log.

Something else to try... as a test. Disconect your internet connection and disable your AV programs. then reboot and see if you still get the problem. You may need to disable the AV services in \service manager to prevent them starting up again after the reboot.

Eddie

First - looks like the sort on CPU usage is showing low to high - next time have a look and if all are 0, then click on CPU usage again to sort from high to low.

The error log messages:

the errors about "sr" are related to System Restore
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903264
suggested Microsoft fix is to turn off system restore and then on again
also look to se how many chang.log files there are

the warnings are related to b57w2k.sys which is Broadcom NIC driver - so there is some error with the driver for the network card - try reinstalling?

righty... looks like we'tre onto something.

Double click on the latest error (the red ones) and post a screenie.... do the same for the latest warnings (the yellow ones)

Hi Ben,

Ok I have started up this morning and still got shocking boot up times but hardly any error messages. Here's the latest log with the warnings highlighted and the relevant warning box showing further details.

Oh I have run chkdsk but got some strange prompts as well. I have added a copy of the screenie for that.

Can't add anything to your problem Eddie but surprised that Acer formatted your drives FAT32. Would have expected to see NTFS :o

Hope Ben manages to get to the bottom of it soon for ya ;-)

Hi Eddie....

If I were a gambling man.... I'd say your hard disk is on the way out. Looks like the area of the disk where windows is storing some of its system files may be damaged. As a result, its having to recreate and try to fix these problems each time it starts.

Also drives should be formated using NTFS. FAT32 is / was crap and error recovery on a FAT32 drive is very limited.

Is the laptop new ish?
