thanks for the tips cbris. here you go garry , been working at this all day and lots more to do. the white strip was a pain to match up on the front. alas i got there in the end.
your note on the conversion was just the switch in the grey matter that put things together and now i feel that i can now start to get somewhere with this new side to fs. so here my real repaint effort.

as i say lots more to do yet.

That's a very good start

Already you can see it flying in FS so the rest is just getting it done with the knowledge that what ever you do it will work

One thing to mention is white

White is 255 255 255 but I use no lighter than 238 238 238

Sometines I use as low as 220 220 220.......that looks a little grey in the paint programe but FS tends to bleach whites so I peg them back.

Likewise black is 0 0 0 but that is too stark

20 20 20 is nearer the mark

Experiment with what suites you, your subject and setup......but avoid pure black or pure white.

The larger the area of black or white the better it is to peg it away a bit.

Garry,

Doesn't 0 0 0 end up blanking out the view of whatever you are texturing?

That's how Rick got rid of the Earth that rolled out of the Beverley's cargo bay when the doors were opened. I've used it to remove the Japanese geisha girl 'crew' from Hama's BMW 750 as well.

And it's the same 'colour' used to make the windscreen see-through on 2D panel .BMPs.

But I understand where you are coming from Kit. With some models it is possible to 'remove' unwanted parts by adding pure black (0,0,0) to the relevant part of the alpha layer - it was the method I tried to use when Itosan released his Swift with the erroneous Fireflash missiles, but I was thwarted as some of the parts were actually untextured!!

Hi Kit

As rick and Andy mentioned that is alpha channel colour used for max transparency on transparent parts or for no shine on reflective parts.

My reference above is for painting liveries.

Thanks for the tip on the MIPs Garry

Was trying to do this at the weekend and couldn't work out how you guys got the high definition. Would have helped if I had the latest dxt.bmp, I didn't have the no MIPs option STUPID

Anyway, sorted now

That very nice Fraser.

Is that the one that was used in ancient Egypt?

You are not alone with ye olde version of DXT....I came across another member with the same problem fairly recently

It's magic when with a click on a box turns a fuzzy mess in to a sharp masterpiece

"PHARO" -you're too sharp for your own good matey

Think Libyan Arab was as close as it got

It used to be on the Edinburgh-Norwich/Amsterdam almost permanently for a couple of years when I started high school  It sat all day at Turnhouse on a Sunday for a 1705 dep to Amsterdam.

Cheers
