Personally, while hand flying the aircraft or comminicating with the controllers I will be at 1x, once on autopilot I usually go to 2x or 4x, and once at cruise altitude as fast as the rate will go. I dont have the time or the patence to look at the gauges on a long flight at real time, and think the worst sin you can do is leave the cockpit unattended for any period of time longer than it takes to get a drink from the fridge or go to the loo.

But thats just me.

Jonesey hope you don't mind me responding to Steves' question of the ATC trick but think this is what he means as I do it myself on longer hops.

If you are using FS Flight Planner and FS ATC for a flight, wait until you reach your designated altitude. Then wait until you are requested to contact another control centre then just respond to that command.....but do not make contact with the new centre be it London Control or Paris Control etc. then as you near your destination i.e. 30 - 45 minutes away go to ATC menu then press Contact ........ and you will automatically make contact with the control centre you are presently over i.e. Italy.....just remember that when contact is established they will ask you to turn on a heading which is 180 degrees to the one you are presently flying. Ignore the instructions as they will come back and ask you to turn back onto your original heading.

Extremely useful if you are flying long distance at 1x and want your dinner!!
