This is true flying is like taking the bus these days for most. thus they take it for granted. which is good i suppose. Dont know how long that will last what with these tree hugging monsters that blame aviation for anything that goes wrong in the world.

I get the impression they think the plooms of vapour coming from aero engines is polution. when infact as we all know its 90% water if not more.

There was once a time when flying was considered a romantic and exciting expierience

But. I'm afraid those days are long gone

And the tree huggers will be hapy to know about this new 'EcoJet' that I read about in this months Airliner World, apparently being more envoiornmentally friendly. The long thin body and triangular windows remind me of the Caravelle 12, what a beauty!

i noticed the tear drop windows and thought the same, but also why? how does it benefit the design? i cant see then going back to props though :lol:

as clarkson put it "When i was a boy you could go from London to Newyork in 2 hrs".

So jets back to props next? What next? will railways bring back the steam engine?

I noticed the windows too. Thought it a bit odd.

Even odder is EZY 'launching' their own airliner. I remember those external fans being touted in the early 80s, but I think they probably died a death with the advent of the massive, modern turbofans (which is essentially what these are, but ducted instead).

I'll be excited when a major aircraft manufacturer actually has the balls to produce a design which is different to the tube-with-wings which is currently fashionable. Boeing has been stung once, so I doubt they'll be in a hurry. :smile:

I think one of the problems with the ducted fan was the extreme irritating noise.

They were at one stage talking as if that was the next big thing and after modifying an Islander and one side of a 727 and DC 9 it faded away along with the production aircraft that used it...like the Optica. :dunno:

Yes, I remember the modifications to those. I seem to remember they were picked due to fears about blade separation! :shock:

I bet a lot of airline execs are kicking themselves now, if these really delivered a 30% reduction in fuel burn. But I suppose a 737NG delivers more than a 30% saving over an MD-80.

Presumably the M400 will be powered by some variation of these, given it's M0.72 cruise...

In relation to the Discovery Turbo discussion, I agree 100% that it is no replacement for Wings. There are one or two a/c programmes now and again, however I find myself keeping an eye on National Geographic and the History Channels as there are occasional gems on them.
