Went for a little explore earlier (56k sorry)

Post by thehappyotter »

Inspired by an earlier thread on Urban Exploration I took the dogs out earlier and took my camera with me, this is only a small part of the abandoned RAF base right on my doorstep.

Mainly had a walk around what i'm guessing was the officers area and their mess.

The hangers and control tower/flying side of the base are for another day as is the old RAF dog training area.

I did have permission to go in by the way.

This building seemed to be a little more run down that the others:

A long time since tennis has been played here:

Someone probably once took really good care of their homes here, now look at them:

Will get closer to the hangers next time, they're being used by industry:

Hope you enjoyed them, keep an eye out for more from other areas.

Hi Rob

What a crying shame
I love the buildings used by the RAF.

none of the housing looks too bad to use.

Where is that ie: which RAF base was it ?.

Regards
Rick

Rick,

It's Newton.

There are two housing estates on the site, one has been converted and sold off (i'm housesitting at a mates there this week which is how I got access) and the other, the one pictured, has access problems so has never been redeveloped.

The council have put posters up on the lamposts locally with information about a planning application they have received to build a new modern housing estate.

Think it will be flattened sooner rather than later.

On your doorstep eh? About 2 miles from me then.

So were you home yesterday for the Chinook low level flypast?

And yes it will probably be flattened.

Was going to be an asylum centre, but rumour now has it as a nuclear waste dump.

I saw that article about the Nuclear Waste Dump and could see nothing in it other than it being a thinly veiled recruitment drive for Greenpeace...

It basically said that Newton was "on a list if possible sites in the 1980's" and nothing more. A free paper scaremongering.

The housing is being opposed by the residents.

I missed the Chinook but have seen a few recently, they tend to fly more over Bingham way though.

Wonder where they're going/coming from?

I heard that about Milton Keynes, but I think it was just wishful thinking

The Chinooks were a pair very low over Saxondale roundabout and had to climb to go over Newton hangars, then headed off east.

Even my wife noticed them.

And I did not want to glow in the dark so pleased about your opinion on the waste.

Very eerie, something allways interest me about old derelict buildings ect.

That would be the coolest place ever to be used an an urban airsoft site! In fact I think there is an olf raf site being used.

It's massive, that's just a small bit of the full site.

600 odd acres if I remember rightly.

It would be a brilliant place for your games, it's used heavily as a police dog training site so you have to watch out for rabid monsters though...

Rob

Those must be your hounds then in the photo - look very respectable lads ---
Tag is totally taken with K9 cops - everytime he sees one of the MLVPD Suvs he has to go look at the "doggies"
