Against my better judgement, I found myself having to install Java on this PC (Win7 Ultimate). The problem I'm having is that it's refusing to NOT look for updates.. despite me having unticked the 'Check for Updates' box.. being warned that I won't get the latest security updates.. clicking 'Apply' then OK. For the remainder of the 'session' the pc is open.. it's fine. Next time I switch the pc on.. within a min or so.. it's back.. 'A Java update is available'!!
A little advice on how to kill it would be much appreciated
Start button, type "msconfig" (without the quotes). In the popup, click the "Startup" tab, and uncheck the tickbox next to "Java Auto updater" (or similar). Click "Apply" and "OK" to close the box. It will prompt you to restart, but you don't really need to as it will take effect next time you boot anyway.
It's also a handy way to stop other cr@p loading at start up too.
WTF is it with Java I took it off my XP machine and vowed never to have it back but certain very useful progs need it in order to function. Take it off and you can't use the progs.. put it back and it ruins your life (a bit of an overstatement but it sure is annoying)
George.. I originally had the notify me bit ticked (default) but unticking the auto-check for updates greys the notification bit out.. which of course it should. The b1oody thing kept coming back though I'm gonna let it restart now to see if it pop's up to notify me an update is available.. again. I've a 7lb sledge hammer standing by if it does
I should give Oracle some credit where its due. You may remember a few years back it was accepted that Java (JRE for windows) was not only hopeless bloatware, but riddled with security vulnerabilities. To much fanfare, the US federal government announced plans to rid itself of Java. Now this was really bad news for Oracle and several others. Many of the others moved away from Java, but Oracle had nowhere that they could realistically go, so they set about fixing it and persuaded the US Government to change its mind. In February of this year they released a version of JRE 7 (I can't recall if it was 55 or 56) that forced developers to digitally sign their code. That together with various other enhancements has made it fairly safe, much more reliable on Windows and at a point now where its probably worth having and letting it auto update... just beware the ASK toolbar etc that it will prompt to install
Indeed matey, but that was XP. I've been reluctant myself but had it on for Boat AI tool and Whisplacer. From March I've had it on auto update (albeit this is on Win 8.1) and haven't had a problem, so long as I remember to untick the "Install ASK Toolbar" etc.
Well.. I've just let it update (while avoiding the ASK toolbar) then it came up with another box asking to check for out of date Java versions. I clicked on ok then got a warning that I should only let this software run amok through my pc if I trust the origin of the file. To be brutally honest.. I don't trust Java/Oracle but held my breath and clicked OK. As it stands.. I've started breathing again
AIBT was one reason I had to install it.. I think ADE uses it too as does SAMM2
