Scenery Accuracy...

I have wondered how accurate the scenery is in MS Flight and I just landed at Kahului airport on Maui...I set the view to overhead and took a screenshot then I went to the same place in Google Map on my iPad and took another screenshot. here they are for comparison:-

Yes, that's very impressive, Peter. If Flight is allowed to continue to expand, it could fulfil most of my simming needs. I'd need a bit more of the world and a classic jetliner. A more powerful PC too, but I'm just waiting to see what comes along with Windows 8.

Re the iPad. I've just read that with the iOS 6 update, Apple are dropping google maps and introducing their own mapping program. I hope they allow google to remain as an app as I use it a lot. If I turn it on while I'm travelling in the back cab of my train, it tracks the railway line smoothly and accurately to within about 10ft so in satellite view it's like you're getting a helicopter view of yourself. It's far more advanced technology than anything the train has!

It is interesting that if you are looking at this post on your iPad then both pictures will have their right ends clipped off...However if you are using a PC then they will not be clipped. Also, if you look at this post, still using your iPad but looking at Mutleys Hangar Forums or any other place that I post them, then the pictures will NOT be clipped.

This CBFSIM forum is the only one that clips my 900pixels wide pictures when viewed on an IPad

BTW I have a Bad Elf GPS that I plug into my iPad and it seems to be very accurate...I would love to try it in a Train.

I agree with you that Google is good mapping and I would certainly hope to retain it as an App in iOS 6... However, I will also be keen to see just how good the Apple mapping is...I have heard rumours that it is outstanding.

I've just had a look at your Mutley's Hangar post on my iPad and I see what you mean. There's a lot chopped off the right hand edge here. I had noticed that any images I posted on the site over 800 pixels wide would give some viewers a problem so I now restrict myself to that. But I hadn't realised that it was so noticeable on the iPad.

It's not a pixel thing as I've recently upgraded from the iPad2 to the new one with the 2048x1536 display but it makes no difference to the CBFS display.

I'm glad you've heard good reports of the Apple mapping. I believe both Apple and Google have been criss-crossing the globe doing intensive aerial photography so I guess we're in for a next level experience of mapping technology whichever application we use.

Well, I suppose you could say that's as real as it gets - until they incorporate live satellite views

Peter - I've just remembered an interesting story I read the other day about GPS equipped devices. It was a tweet by Avon and Somerset Police about a burglar they caught in Bristol. He'd been breaking in to houses while people were asleep and targeting iPhones. He'd gone into a bedroom and unplugged two charging phones but the householder woke up and was slightly injured in the scuffle and the burglar escaped. The victim then activated the built in tracker via his laptop and pinpointed the location of his phones to a house in Bristol and called the Police. The Police positioned themselves outside the house and asked the victim to activate the alarm. As soon as they heard it, they broke in and caught the burglar fast asleep with his bag of loot next to him.

Somewhat similar story about a camera accidentally left in a restaurant.
The theives used it to photograph themselves, as you do.
They then walked past an internet hot spot, which downloaded the photos to the owner's computer.
Owner sent photos to proprietor of the restaurant, who recognised the staff. BINGO.
And I bother to destroy the address area on envelopes & parcel wrappers put in the recycling!

I have the "Find my iPad" activated on mine and have tested it...It works very well

Great story about the iPhones...Made me chuckle.

I'm a great fan of NCIS on TV and have all the DVDs...They make huge use of phone and GPS technology to track bad guys.

I've noticed this "clipping" of images too. The setting are set to 1080 x 800, and I've no idea why it does it. It does seem to depend on the resolution your using. Instead of scaling the whole page, it seems to crop the image and make the section of the forum containing the posts narrower, while maintaining the width of the right hand column containing the information of the poster. I've just changed the settings to unrestricted image size temprarily to see if that makes a difference, but I suspect not. Can you tell me what res your pads are running when your seeing the clipping please?

In adition to my above post, I've added a mobile style that will automatically detect if your using a mobile web browser (this shouldn't affect iPads, but will make a difference to smart phones) Interestingly, that style doesn't seem to crop the images, even on smart phones. DM created a nice verion of this for me a few months back, but at the moment I can't find were I put it, so its just using the default icons etc.
