As I understand it, the carrier aircraft is the better choice (over the STOL) but the cats were to be some sort of new electo magnetic type as the US were also planning to use, but they are having real problems with them, hence looking again at the STOL variant.

Ben - the catapult you are describing sounds like a giant "rail gun".

When I was about 14 or 15 (1997/98) I had a computer game called "Joint Strike Fighter" where I could choose whether I flew a Boeing X-32 or Lockheed-Martin X-35. I think the game was concurrent with the demonstrators flying. So that means if , if we get these things (whichever variant they turn out to be?) in 2020, it will already be 23 years old :dunno:

Here's an idea. Cancel the F-35s, let's have some new Harriers, let's build them at Brough. Let's start tomorrow. :hide:

By that rational lets have two much smaller carriers

I think one of the reasons for looking for a harrier alternative was range. I suppose we could end up buying the French Raffael carrier version :worried:

Yep, apparently the tests aren't going well and costs are spiraling out of control, so much so that the senate are talking about pulling the plug.
