Apparently that was done because they were throwing around ideas for airliner versions and that was an attempt to make it look less military
The Valiant B2 was painted all black for reasons unknown.

I'm not sure that's entirely true Garry, as I'm sure one of the Shorts prototypes, and one of the Canberras wore something similar?
