This was me at Grosmont ready to take out a Saturday night dining train. It was a good job to be rostered on, a sedate run to Pickering where we were fed a first class meal. The drawback was that by the time we got back on shed and put the loco to bed the pub was officially closed. The loco is the only Black 5 fitted with Stephenson link valve gear. It is a cracking engine and as it has roller bearings on all axles it is a very free runner. The picture was taken about 1988, the loco has been overhauled several times since then, I am in need of restoration.

I could be rude and say they were the latest fashions in Grosmont. I think it was really a works outing. I did think the man leading the group was Sir Topham Hatt aka the fat controller, I got a sharp look from him when I asked him. Garry has missed a lot if he has never seen a steam loco in action. To drive them is a fantastic feeling, it needs driver and fireman working togetherto get the best from the engine. My biggest regret is that I had to give up driving before railway privatisation meant that properly trained and qualified drivers from private lines were allowed to drive on the main line.
