Why a Deltic though Bob over a normal inline set up??

There seems to be an awlful lot of bits clattering about

Precision when you think that all has to line up if it's going to run more than a few hours and no computers in those days to run robots for manufacturing.........Robots eh!!....who needs 'em

High power to weight ration. The locomotives had two power unit/generator sets each at 1650hp running at a max speed of 1500rpm & a maximum (officially) permitted speed of 100mph.

Compare that with the other express locomotives of the day, known to all as the "Class 47", fitted with one Sulzer 12LDA28-C engine of 2750hp at 800rpm, a maximum speed of 95mph & a weight of 114 tons, or the various 'Peak' class loco's (Classes 44, 45 & 46) which used the slightly earlier varient of the engine in the Class 47, but with a max speed of 90mph & turning the scales at between 133 & 139 tons.

The added advantage of course with the Deltic was it had/has two engines, so if one expired - as happened a few years ago with 55022 (see http://www.royalscotsgrey.com/) when it in typical deltic fashion, it managed to 'put a leg out of bed', to use the correct rail speak for throwing a piston out of the crank case cover, wrecking it & that associated block. Thus it can either continue on 1 engine - [the electrical outputs being so configures that if the loco is working on 1 engine the output from the main generator goes to all six traction motors - one mounted underneath on each axel, as 55022 did all the way from Doncaster [where the piston let go], all the way to Edinburgh, or at least to the next station or loop, so as to clear the line for following trains.

I think I got it.

The forces required to hold down the head to the block in an inline
are being tranfered to an outputshaft in a deltic engine.
