Hi Ian..

Yup.. on this occassion, Firefox does seem to have been the culprit. IE7 gave me the option to open or download so I downloaded it no problemo and as Toby said.. a very nice landing ;)

This aside, I'm not going to 'bin' Firefox as it gives me nice, clear text.. something neither IE7 nor 8 seem capable of doing 8)

Just a thought Dave. If you're seeing slightly fuzzy text, I wonder if that is due to Microsoft's bizarre 'Clear Type'.
I have it turned OFF in Internet Explorer and Windows (XP), which in my opinion gives far clearer text.

In Internet Explorer...
'Tools' menu
Internet Options
'Advanced' tab
'Multimedia' section
Make sure 'Always use Clear Type for HTML' is not ticked
OK

If that doesn't appear to make much difference, it can be turned off at the Windows level too...
Control Panel
Display
'Appearance' tab
'Effects' button
Make sure 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' is not ticked
OK
Apply

Hi Dave :hello:

I've tried the first one but had forgotten about the second. Tks for the pointer

EDIT..
Second option has cleared it mate :welldone: We're rockin and a rollin' on IE7
There is a downside to this.. I don't find IE streams video anywhere near as well as Firefox but for those occassions.. I can always use Firefox. Cheers mate.. much appreciated ;)

EDIT#2..
Another downside I've just noticed is that while small print is now nice and clear.. large print (as in the title of this thread at the top of the page) is now jagged. Ah well.. no gain without pain :)

Bizarre is certainly the right word, Dave! 'Clear Type' is anything but clear to my eyes. There is a tool you can download from Microsoft to fine tune 'Clear Type' - in XP it is an additional control panel applet. I tried that and still found that the best setting was OFF!

Y E S.. most frustrating.. to BOTH Dave's (dunno if DG has this problem too) :D

I'm finding it irritating to see the large text jagged (as little as it is) though it's nice to see good clean small text which is the bit one reads most. Odd that Firefox is clear in all respects (as does IE6 which I still prefer) :| So.. Firefox and clean text throughout but with the odd download issue (not including it's in-built foibles) or.. IE7/8 with clear large text (font smoothing on) and fuzzy small text or jagged large text (font smoothing off) but clear small text. Things shouldn't be this difficult should they. What did M$ do between IE6 and IE7 to 'F' text up?? Only they know the answer and on it continues with IE8 8)

DaveB.. IE7 for now B)smk

There's appears to be no difference between my Firefox & IE8. Both display jagged big fonts on this forum. *-)
It does depend on what the text says though. I notice that 'ETPS 1-11' is very smooth looking when compared to 'Gallery'.
And Vs & Ws are more jagged than Ps & Ss. ;)

I'd never really noticed it before. Happily jagged text doesn't bother me though, it's nice. Looks like a proper computer. :D
(I do need my smooth full anti-alias & mip map 3D graphics though :) )

Without wishing to appear smug :worried: I'd just like to say that IE8 with default settings in Windows 7 doesn't have any jaggies even when viewed at 400% size and it's also faster than I am at opening pages. (OK - that did sound a bit smug :$ )

Is anybody else finding this or does it perform differently on different systems?

I have Windows 7 and I get frequent lock ups and have to shut it down

It locks up often on searches and is far far slower at opening up page than IE6.4 is..........I have that on the PC. :)

It take a long time to initiate on startup

But I tried the different settings for the type as DM mentioned and either on or off it's the same and looks just like Firefox in that respect....cystal clear :)
