1979 Wheel up landing in a YS-11

The engines are not dissimilar; the YS-11s are Dart 10 Mk 542 or 543s and Andover has Dart 12 mk 201, a military version of the same engine. Both have a different reduction gearing ratio than most other marques; 0:0775 as opposed to 0:093 on most other engines. As Garry pointed out the military engine has a reversible propeller

Have you ever seen a NAMC Fraser?

A very rare bird in these parts.

The only on I can think of off hand was the one at Southend that was set on fire.

The closest to home was the Olympic fleet.

No never seen one for real, don't suppose I will now :sad: Was a bit underpowered for its size, interesting aeroplane never the less, a few decent bits of footage and sound on youtube.

I was looking at those bits and pieces.

I was never really quite sure how big it was.

The small windows compared to other Dart types made it look large in the way the Viscount looks smaller due to the large windows.

But in scale with the engines it was clearly on the large size with a nose a little bit like a DC 8 :think:

It must have been on the size limit to have been pulled along by a couple of Darts which were chosen over the Allison.

I also notice it has the loger more pointed spinner like the 780..was that due to larger mechanism for the big prop?:

It served in it's homeland for many a long year and that can't be bad.

Hi Garry,

It was quite a big aeroplane; 60 odd seats I think.

The spinner is 780 like, the reason for which I dont know. It has the two pitch lock system of the Dart7 and later, but only the YS11 and 780 had the altered reduction gearing, housed roughly beneath the oil cooler intake.

I saw much of the Olympic fleet after an enforced stopover in Athens in 1976 (BMA 707 leased to EAA didn't want to do the Nairobi-London flight in one go). But don't remember much about them.

The Mid Pac fleet in Honolulu made much more of an impression - busy coming and going on the inter-island flights.

And looks like I'll have to do my own repaint of Mid Pacific!

Hawaiian Airlines adopted the type as well after leasing a Viscount 745D for a year and they were popular with Piedmont.

There was a story going around that they were not popular as built for the Japanese small stature the window line was too low.

Probably someones jokes that became "fact"

Don't know if that was urban myth or truth but it was popular.

I doubt if that would sway an airline over economics :think:

I am currently working with Esa,on new models and repaints for the ys-11 v2.7,the tripple paintkit of mine thats on avsim,is for the v2.5,and i have reworked the paintkit for the new v2.7,it as grown abit as well,to take care of the m models,and night textures have now been added to the combi cargo hold,also a few textures where reworked to take care of the mods esa made to the wing/fuse area,and the cones and flags.
I have not got round to releaseing the updated paintkit to avsim as yet.
I have just been updating my aleutian old scheme,with apu,and adding the new cargohold night textures,i have yet to zip these to avsim.
If you have any pics,of the one you would like to be painted,then let me know.
The next one i was going to start on was ANA.
