You see, the other end of the cable is connected to a gas (or petrol) foot petal in the passanger compartment.... It is a modern motor car after all

I used to have a Stag - 6 cylinders with twin SUs. Absolute nightmare - usually only got 4 of the 6 cylinders firing reliably and always trying to balance the carbs. Was very comfortable though and the same sh!t brown as in the picture.

Maybe that was the problem - I always thought the Stag engine was two Dolomites siamesed.....making it a V8

Yes, but many replaced the Triumph 3 litre V8 with a Rover 3.5 litre version:
