Hiya Fellas

I've been researching my family history and have received a few photos I was hoping some here might be able to answer some questions I have

The first is of my grandfather ( as I was told and as the title of the photo states, first row send from left) ) while he was in the Bn. Gordon Highlanders 53rd (Y.S.) Bn .. perhaps some here may have had a relative in the highlanders around that time who may be able to tell me some details?

The second is a card he sent to his family ... I don't know much about this, in fact nothing ( it says 51st on the card but the title of the photo As mentioned above states 53rd?) was my grandfather part of a force that beat the baddies? ...

Anyway -My cousins husband sent them to me with the info he received after a visit to Scotland from the brother of my grand dad and his children.. but he is a little unclear about a few things. Probably because they spoke with ... an accent?
I would certainly be very grateful for any help you could lend.

Hi Joe ...is that a marking on his leg of a mark on the neg to highlight that particular person.

They did things like that in those days.

I may be wrong, but that looks like an Australian huntsman spider on his right leg.
IIRC, they were mascots of one or two Highlander Bns.


Truth be known, the only thing I can say with certainty, is that:
either- two of them aren't wearing hats,
or- they wore stealth berets.
EDIT:
No problem about 51st and 53rd; one is quoted as Division, one as Battalion. A Division is 10,000 to 30,000 men, whereas a Battalion is only 300 - 800.

The 53rd YS (as on the card) was a Young Soldier battalion. Being a navy chap, I don't understand the way the army do stuff.. brigades, battalions e t c

The navy is so much easier.. sailor.. ship The ship will be part of a squadron and I think that's about it. We don't have enough now for it to go any further
