Dodger , yes , it was a bit like that . We came through the sausage machine a bit later , but was still a bit old fashioned , formal , militaryish . At the end we filled out a ''preference'' form.... yep BOAC VC10 London 1st , BEA Skyvan Glasgow 2nd ........ all ended up on BEA Tridents London ! ... airline equivalent of PBI [ poor bloody infantry ]. Remember 1st supernumerary , not to Beirut but 55 mins to Belfast and then back [ BEA - back every afternoon ] . Superb training, and very lucky and privileged to do it , and for the following 36 years . 'Tho when finished Hamble .. no jobs so living in a caravan , end of rwy at Manchester , doing aerial photography and joy-rides at week-ends in a Beagle Husky [ Thanks to Dave Molyneaux and Britsim's G-ASNC { registration letters were Very pale and Very small to minimise being reported when low flying for a photo } ].
Only 4 Chippys [ thanks Rick Piper ] left at Hamble in our time , flew 3 ... the 4th was G-ARMC , seen bouncing down the rwy [ in the vid ] in the very capable hands of ''The Walrus '' Deputy CFI Joe Douglas . 39 years later flew in her and passed the vid on to her owners , who were not aware of the pressures her main spar had been subject to !
Most of our time was on Pa 28s and original Link Trainers ; and then twin time on the Gentleman's Aerial Carriage , the Beech B55 Baron . Followed by lots of multi crew time in fixed base no visual Comet sims.
All of that era will have retired at 55 from BA , but may have worked 'til 60 with other operators. Euro legislation has changed that , and a few old colleagues are pushing their zimmer frames through the night and timezones towards 65 !
Garry , I'm afraid we were not much older than you ....but it' is more than 2/3rds of my life ago ,'tho the skills once learned stood us in good stead for a lifetime .
