FSX demo mode???

Post by ajb »

Any ideas why I've just got a message from FSX after a 30 minute flight as follows:

Thank you for trying Microsoft(R) Flight Simulator X.
The demo time limit has expired and Flight Simulator
will now shut down.

Then the swine turfs me out and FSX closes!! This is a fully licenced version bought some years ago and registered during the last installation.

EEk.. not heard of that before :-O

It's not a consequence of the recent probs you had is it Andy? I'm wondering if getting your system up and running again (after that nasty bug) has somehow removed the registration details for FSX. Clutching at straws.. this is the only thing I can think of at the mo *-)

I suspect that you're right about it being as a result of my recent virus problems Dave. I managed to recover most things but I guess there will be a few issues floating around for a while.

Ben. I thought that activation might be the problem but couldn't find anywhere to activate it with the Microsoft key. Oddly enough the FSX entry under Microsoft Games in the start menu has disappeared. I'm going to look around the internet for ideas but I guess another re-install is on approach :(

I suspect in cleaning up your virus, the activation key has gone. This will leave the program in limbo as it was activated, but now the key is gone. It might be a reinstall job.

I think you're right Ben. I found numerous problems so decided to delete the FSX files and reinstall :( That has proved a nightmare as the install disks kept thinking that FSX was still around and would only let me repair or remove (and remove kept failing  So I had to go through the registry and strip out every reference to FSX, and there are many, before the install disks would work. Finally at around 11pm I had a working FSX at SP2 level. Now it's a case of putting all my addons back.

Didn't need the 'no CD' files then.

Always better if you can sort it without using them - but sometimes necessary.

AAAARRRGGGHHH! If I was forced to delete FSX, I'd have put my Sceneries and Aircraft into another directory. After reinstall, I'd just copy them back to FSX.
Under normal conditions, they don't get damaged, even if a remove and reinstall is done.

Mike,
I usually have a full backup of FSX and FS9. Unfortunately I have a good FS9 backup but lost my FSX backup  Had I copied addons, scenery and simobjects from the currect installation I would still have problems as the Cryptowall virus screwed up several files in those directories and TBH the only way to ensure their integrity was a full reinstall, of everything. Boring but effective. Anyway it's done and I'm flying again :excited:
