Re: Tu154 Stunt

Goodness, that is an amazing escape. However, I wonder what caused the total electical failure? in the video you can see the clamshell reversers open, so that would imply the engines were operational unless they open independantly of engine power? Surely if the engines were operational there should ...

Re: A Classic Day Out

As far as I'm aware all Wrights production is still over in Ballymena. Although they started out using the Alusuisse patent assembly process, they are now claiming to use their own patented bolted aluminium body called "Aluminique" although just what the difference is I'm not sure!

Re: A Classic Day Out

Oddly Wrights are probably the only firm that hasn't owned Plaxton at some stage in the past ten years. Having been independant for nearly 100 years, they bought the Henlys group in 1989, who expanded by buying Northern Counties coachbuilders, and by 2000 they formed a joint venture with Alexander a...

Re: Another crazy Russian idea?

Didn't BR or one of the companies produce an experimental GT loco? I think I read sowhere that it used the turbine for high speed cruising and a normal diesel for slow speed and shunting. There were three experimental gas turbine locomotives and one experimental gas turbine powered APT on BR. The f...

Re: Bristol Super Freighter update!!!

On "The Man in the Sky" film, it's an excellent, typically Ealing production high in detail, accuracy and production values. What's more, the slushy family lovey-dovey stuff doesn't affect the flow of the film too much. There's lots of aircraft action and quite a few nice little in-jokes ...

Re: Bring back the memories!!

We have, in recent times, witnessed the birth and death of music casettes , video tapes, 5.5 inch floppys and BASIC language......CB radios have largely faded now.....this side of the Pond at least. Pre recorded music cassettes maybe, but the blank cassettes are still made and widely used by Talkin...

Re: Bring back the memories!!

I remembered most of the list but at 47 I don't call myself ancient, I'm only the same age as the BAC1-11 and that's a modern jet airliner... I had trouble convincing some younger types that up until the mid 1970's Radio 1 and Radio 2 shared programming and air-time for part of the day and on Sunday...

Re: But is it Art?

Actually, I agree, I was expecting the artist to be using the aircraft to make some sort of message about war and military issues, but instead she's actually celebrating the power and form of the aircraft. Sounds like she had the same experience a lot of aircraft enthusiasts have when they see a low...

Re: Smokey sooty fire breathing welsh dragons...

I hadn't realised they'd painted no1 in LNWR black! I live just down the road from Tywyn, in Fairbourne, so I tend to use their shop as my nearest railway book shop on the way back from the Co-Op. The Tal-y-Llyn are having a "Have a Go" weekend on the 3-4 July when it will be possible to h...

Re: The cars of the future past - revisited

More recently Volvo made a slightly more practical gas turbine car using one of those micro gas turbine generators used on oil rigs to power electric motors and recharge batteries. Gets round the problem of mechanically linking a high speed jet engine and slow speed road wheels which bedevilled cars...
